Great Britain 1833 National Equitable Labour Exchange Birmingham Branch/Forward Trading Co. Birmingham 1 Hour
Great Britain National Equitable Labour Exchange Birmingham Branch/Forward Trading Co. Birmingham 1 Hour July 22, 1833/191_ Remainder.
This remainder comes from a program devised by socialist reformer Robert Owen. It was a cooperative where workers would exchange their goods for notes which were valued according to the time needed to produce the items. Not all was harmonious, as disputes over the value of products and the time taken to make them led to failure. All branches closed in 1834. Apparently, the Forward Trading Co. of Birmingham intended on using these notes as promotional items and therefore their information was printed on the back along with the "191_" date. All of these that we have seen have the overprint on the back. PCGS Choice New 63.
